Ryedale School gets a visit from Stretch Pizza https://ryedaleschool.org/ryedale-school-gets-a-visit-from-stretch-pizza/ Sun, 11 Oct 2020 21:50:01 +0000 https://ryedaleschool.org/?p=27826 On Thursday 1st October, FPN students at Ryedale School were thrilled to have the opportunity to interview Jason from Stretch Pizza, as well as sample some of his street food.

Stretch Pizza is a Hull based street food business that specialises in Neapolitan style pizza. Jason set up the business during lockdown and has quickly become a hugely popular vendor in the Hull area.

Year 11 FPN students at Ryedale School are studying International Street Food, and so having the opportunity to interview Jason and sample some of his delicious pizza was both very educational and a real treat for students who have had to adapt quickly to a new normal.

In the evening, Jason even managed to support staff wellbeing, by sending staff home with delicious pizza for themselves and their families.

Thank you so much to Jason and Stretch Pizza for providing our students with this excellent opportunity and for feeding our hungry staff. Your pizza is deliziosa!

Laura raises money for charity with her baking expertise https://ryedaleschool.org/laura-raises-money-for-charity-with-her-baking-expertise/ Wed, 15 Jul 2020 10:09:34 +0000 https://ryedaleschool.org/?p=27646 Putting her baking skills to good use, Laura Potter has raised over £945 over the last 4 weeks for Martin House Children’s Hospice. She held an online auction, with a promise of “A cake a week, for a month”. People were asked to submit their bids privately and the three highest bids were winners. Collectively their bids totalled £500 and they were treated to Chocolate Cake, Bakewell Tart, Millionaire’s Shortbread and Victoria Sponge with Cream and Summer Berries.

Martin House is a wonderful place and has been such a great support to Laura and her family, as her sister Issy visited for respite care before she died in 2012.

Well done Laura, and good luck with your continued fundraising.

Theo Nicholson, 12, from Hawnby, raises £800 in memory of his dad https://ryedaleschool.org/theo-nicholson-12-from-hawnby-raises-800-in-memory-of-his-dad/ Mon, 04 May 2020 12:36:57 +0000 https://ryedaleschool.org/?p=27345 Theo Nicholson, a Ryedale School student from Hawnby, decided to spend 24 hours on his trampoline for Yorkshire Cancer Research, while honouring the memory of his father, Robin, who died from cancer in 2011.

I can’t remember my dad that well because I was only three when he died, but I wanted to do something for him,” said Theo.

Lots of people are raising money for the NHS right now which is great, but other causes aren’t getting as much support as they used to, which is why I chose Yorkshire Cancer Research. I really enjoyed the challenge; the best part was probably the food my mum brought to me while I was on the trampoline. She even made hot chocolate in the middle of the night.”

Robin was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer at the age of 49 and died less than three months later.

It all came out of the blue, when Robin was diagnosed,”

added Catherine Nicholson, Theo’s mum.

Theo was three years old; his brother was just one and a half and I was four months pregnant with my daughter. I gave birth two months after he died.

Robin was a farmer and about a month before his diagnosis he took part in a tractor run for charity and took Theo with him.

Theo has a very vivid memory of this day with his dad.”

Armed with a sleeping bag, a book, snacks, and water, Theo settled into the challenge hoping to raise awareness for Yorkshire Cancer Research, during the coronavirus pandemic.

It was quite lonely for him on the trampoline during the night,”

added Catherine.

It was a bit frosty in the morning, but he made it through, and his efforts have raised hundreds of pounds for Yorkshire Cancer Research, so I’m very proud.

It’s quite something for him to do this for a good cause at such a young age.”

Learning at Home https://ryedaleschool.org/learning-at-home/ Wed, 18 Mar 2020 10:43:11 +0000 https://ryedaleschool.org/?p=27280 All students have a school email address and password. This can be used to access a range of applications we will use to educate your child during the partial or full closure of the school. The key applications are:

  • Outlook – to access email
  • Microsoft Word and Powerpoint – to create written work and presentations
  • Sharepoint – to access departmental resources
  • Teams – an online platform which enables schools and universities to teach remotely

Our guidance to all students who are currently unable to attend school is to use the materials they have with them, and the links contained in the grid below, to consolidate the progress they have made in lessons so far this academic year. End of year examinations take place in June and revision time is given during our curriculum to prepare students effectively for them. Given these unexpected circumstances it may make sense to move these examinations forward. It is certainly a productive use of any child’s time to prioritise consolidation and revision work in the short term.

In the medium term we shall be using Microsoft Teams to set work (called ‘assignments’), communicate with students, mark work and give feedback. More information on how to use Microsoft Teams will be shared shortly. Please see below for an introductory video.

Ryedale School Equestrian Team Qualify For National Championships https://ryedaleschool.org/ryedale-school-equestrian-team-qualify-for-national-championships/ Mon, 16 Mar 2020 12:35:33 +0000 https://ryedaleschool.org/?p=27264 The Ryedale School Equestrian team had a successful outing to Northallerton Equestrian Centre on 21st February, competing in the National Schools Equestrian Association Show jumping area qualifiers.

Success in the 90cm, 100cm and 110cm show jumping events mean that the teams qualify for the National Championships which will take place later in April.

The 90 team: Eleanor Clark, Erin Smith, Ellen Winter and Katy Mintoft rode super rounds with individual successes for Erin, placing her 5th and Eleanor Clark 6th in a large class.

The 100cm team: Ruby Thompson, Ellen Winter, Erin Smith and Katy Mintoft rode a competitive and faultless four rounds to win with Ellen Winter taking 1st individually too in that class with a rocket-fast round along with Katy Mintoft achieving 6th.

Ruby Thompson went on to win individually in the 110cm class and is also heading to championship finals – well done Ruby, an excellent and technical round ridden!

Other riders, Joe Lumley, Daisy Lumley and Hattie Du Boulay all rode brilliantly in their respective events and enjoyed the outing on their ponies.

Good luck to the team as they travel down to the midlands for the finals!

Ryedale Culture Day https://ryedaleschool.org/ryedale-culture-day/ Mon, 16 Mar 2020 09:32:57 +0000 https://ryedaleschool.org/?p=27249 On Friday 28th February 2020, Ryedale School had a very special visitor by the name of Yasmine. Yasmine is originally from Pakistan and now lives in Skipton. She was here to teach Year 7s about her religion, childhood and prejudice.

culture day

The day started with a whole year assembly where Yasmine greeted us in her native language and told us a little about her life and why she was here. Throughout the day, each Year 7 form then had an hour to take part in a workshop with Yasmine. We got to dress up in outfits that she would wear and try different foods from the Muslim religion. Overall it was a very interesting day where we learnt lots. We would like to thank Mr Hopkins for setting this day up.

Recycling crisp packets https://ryedaleschool.org/recycling-crisp-packets/ Mon, 16 Mar 2020 09:23:40 +0000 https://ryedaleschool.org/?p=27245 From December to January, Ryedale School held a house competition to collect as many crisp packets as possible with the intention of sending these to a volunteer group who would then turn the packets into bivi bags and survival blankets for the homeless and vulnerable.

While the competition was ongoing, Ms Wright (Geography Teacher at Ryedale School), had the opportunity to organise an event in her hometown of Middlesbrough, with the individual named Pen, who had actually invented the crisp packet bivi sack. Pen ran a workshop teaching a group of volunteers how to create these blankets and bivi bags. The crisp packets collected at Ryedale School were turned into two survival blankets and a bivi bag, with plenty of packets left over for the future. The workshop runs monthly and since Ryedale School collected over 1600 crisp packets, it will take some time to use them all up! Thank you very much indeed to all students and staff who donated.

The BBC have published this story over the weekend. It is about where our crisp packets went after the collection earlier this year!

Sport Relief 2020 https://ryedaleschool.org/sport-relief-2020/ Mon, 16 Mar 2020 09:03:08 +0000 https://ryedaleschool.org/?p=27242 This year Ryedale school students and staff supported and raised money for Sport Relief.

The charity committee organised a non-uniform day with a sweet and merchandise sale at break time.

In addition, Mr Moxon organised a ‘Beat Beethoven’ event, where staff and students ran around the netball courts whilst the band performed. Well done to Mr Moxon, Mr Williamson, Mr Pepper and all of the students who got involved, either by running, donating or playing in the band.

Overall we raised a grand total of £1105.90. Thank you to everyone for their support.
